Porcelain vs. Ceramic Tiles

Lots of customers ask us what the difference between ceramic and porcelain tile. So here it is: All tile is ceramic. Porcelain tiles are ceramic. The difference is that porcelain tiles are made at extremely high temperatures making them very dense and virtually water resistent. One reason many people choose porcelain over ceramic is the fact that the color and grain of porcelain is consistent through out whereas ceramic tiles tend to be glazed over and scratches and chips will show.

If you are renovating your bathroom, here are a few links to help you with deciding between ceramic or porcelain tile. Of course our specialist with over 35 years of industry experience can help you make a the right decision as well.

When to Replace Your Carpet and What Your Choices Are

The death of carpet is severely overstated! While many people are selecting wood, wood laminate, natural stone and tile flooring, carpeting is not dead. Carpeting provides a softer and sometimes more relaxing environment in rooms than harder surfaces. For parents with young children, carpeting provides a soft surface you can feel comfortable to lay your child on. Over time, carpet does wear out and needs to be replaced. In this weeks “What We Are Reading”, we help you determine when to replace your carpeting and what your flooring choices are, including carpet itself.

Wood Flooring in the Bathroom Might Not be Such a Good choice

We love wood flooring. We know many people love wood flooring throughout the house and like to keep transitions from room to room. This is not always the best choice when considering the bathroom. Aside from the obvious issues with water and moisture present in a bathroom, there are the issues with leveling with your sink, toilet and bathtub that need to be addressed. For this reason, and many more, most choose a ceramic tile, marble or natural stone for their bathroom flooring.

Bamboo and Cork Flooring

There are many reason people choose wood flooring and an increasingly popular reason is that it is sustainable. This means that while humans utilize environmental resources they are replacing what they use in at the same time. Bamboo is one such choice. While not a wood, bamboo is grass, it grows very quickly. So fast that some species have been known to grow up to 100 cm per 24 hour period. It is strong, stable and resistant to mold, mildew and moisture when properly treated. When manufactured for flooring, it is pressed to be as flat as wood and laminate. For those who seek LEED certification, bamboo is an excellent flooring option.
